I see the distant cars at night in Anafi. Red lights that look like dots surrounded by darkness. Dusty roads. You can hear cars roaring as they climb slowly on the slopes.
For some odd reason, I think of Wim Wenders.
Dusk. People walking in front of an old volcano. Santorini is in the background. Street lights and orange clouds. Some nights of September Anafi resembles a movie set.
Would Wim Wenders be happy here?
I have seen him a couple of times. He lives close to my place in Berlin. It’s odd, but I have seen him at the supermarket. At first, I was confused: a famous director buying groceries? Then I wondered: isn’t it too dull for him? But somebody has to do the shopping I guess. Wavy hair, glasses, steady pace.
Suddenly, I try to imagine him here, in Anafi. I see the trucks moving like ants in the mountains; I see people walking in the twilight. Everything will be alright. Afterward, I recall some more Wim Wenders’ movies and I ‘m bringing in mind scenes that seem applicable to the landscape.
A car is approaching, the driver smokes. A kid is playing football with friends. A talkative lady on the balcony. Three people that could be characters of a movie.
But the story is inexistent for the time being. Wim Wenders won’t probably see Anafi, let alone direct a movie here. But even if he’d visited Anafi I think he would relax and stay at the beach till late. There are a few Germans in Anafi and all of them are equally quiet. They chat silently, they swim, they eat in the tavernas.
Perhaps I should have my camera in hand at all times. If Wim Wenders appears in front of me though, I should be ready. He’ll never direct a movie here, but I might have the chance to shoot some footage. If it’s in the blue hour even better. Brown rocks, blue sea, and white walls. Wim Wenders will like Anafi. He is absent and at the same time omnipresent.
Did you know that I have written a book about Anafi? You can learn more about it here.
