Travel & Street Photography Recap 7

Travel & Street Photography Recap 7

April was the craziest month since I started this blog. I haven’t done so much traveling since October-November 2018. It was also a month that I didn’t stay so much in Berlin: I would only return to Berlin to wash my clothes, pack my hand luggage and take a plane or a train. You will see all the journeys of April soon. But in the travel & street photography recap 7, you will see the photos I owe you from March.

In mid-March, I stopped for a few days in Athens. I wanted to see my family and my friends there. Spending time with them has been a priority lately. Too much traveling can disconnect you from the people you love. The more I travel, the more I feel the urge to return back to Athens, even for a weekend. The days in Athens were lazy and sunny. I also had the chance to write a post that lots of people asked me to: it was about a micro-neighborhood in Athens, the so-called Anafiotika. This is a small district beneath the Acropolis of Athens that resembles an island! It’s an architectural oddity rich in historical background. Make sure to visit Anafiotika the next time you’ll be in Athens.

And then, the rollercoaster started. Two-three days after my return to Berlin I took the train to Prague. I haven’t visited Prague for almost a decade, and I was curious to see if the city has changed. The truth is that Prague has really changed and that it was also more crowded than I remembered it. The days in Prague were busy and I, of course, wrote a lot. I actually wrote a post that you will find interesting; you will read it within the next couple of weeks. If you’d like to see a sneak peek from Prague, I shot a video. I took a ride with a tram, and you can watch it here.

After returning back from Prague, I spent less than 48 hours in Berlin. My connection to the Mediterranean has never faded away; hence I embarked on a plane and traveled to Mallorca. It was my first time there; what a beautiful island Mallorca is! It was warm and sunny in Palma de Mallorca, and traveling off-season meant that mass tourism hadn’t invaded the place yet. I wrote again a lot, and I just wished that I could have stayed longer.

Once again, I had less than 48 hours in Berlin. Unpacking, washing, packing and off to the airport. This time, I flew to Sicily, one of the places that I always wanted to visit. Honestly, Sicily exceeded my expectations. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful and most original places I’ve ever seen. I have also visited a city that impressed me so much that I even thought of moving there in the future. I won’t betray it here though. But I promise that you will read about it soon.

I guess that you already know the process: return to Berlin, washing clothes, packing, and departing. Shortly after my return to Berlin (actually, I stayed less than 24 hours), I took the train to Poznan. This compact city in the heart of Poland proved to be the perfect final journey of April. The city is beautiful, the food delicious and life unfolds slowly. I had a wonderful time in Poznan, and I will try to return there soon since it’s only two and a half hours by train from Berlin.

What’s on the travel & street photography recap 7

Even though I didn’t spend that much time in Berlin, you will see some photos from a controversial exhibition I visited this month. It was a retrospective about Emil Nolde, a very talented painter dedicated to Expressionism. Why do I call it controversial? Well, this is because Emil Nolde was a die-hard Nazi. In my post about the Emil Nolde exhibition, I took a clear stance: you can’t separate an artist from his oeuvre.

Apart from that, you will also see the photos that I owe you from Krakow. This month I finally uploaded my posts from Krakow. Poland’s most visited city is very charming in the eye but somehow disappointed me. I’ve written extensively about the reasons in my travel letter from Krakow. Nonetheless, Krakow is a beautiful city, has several things to do, and it definitely deserves a visit.

A bonus article

Although it has nothing to do with photography, one of the most read posts of this month was the 12 things I learned after six months of travel blogging. Lots of people wrote to me that they found it helpful so if you happen to visit the Letters To Barbara for the first time and you are interested in blogging, you might find it useful, too. Check it out here.

Back to the recap

So, after the short interruption regarding the travel blogging tips, here is this month’s recap. All the photos that you are about to see here are taken, as always, with the Ricoh GR ii camera.

(More about this wonderful camera here.)

Krakow

If you have already read my articles from Krakow, you know that I have mixed feelings about the city. If you intend to travel solo in Krakow and you are introverted, you’d probably have to consider a thing or two. Nonetheless, the Old Town of Krakow is an architectural gem, and the food is delicious.

Berlin

My days in Berlin were busy. Even though I returned for just a few hours every time, I wanted to see friends and try to catch up with the social life and events. This spring was really warm in Berlin, and the sun was shining for days in a row. Unfortunately, I didn’t have so much time to take photos and the only day I used my camera was at the Emil Nolde exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum.
