Iraklia, the island I couldn’t visit

Iraklia is the last island before Schinoussa. The distance between the two islands is barely ten minutes by boat. You can actually see Iraklia from Schinoussa and vice versa.

On the way to Schinoussa, the ferry stopped for five minutes at the port of Iraklia. A handful of people disembarked there. The sea has the typical blue and turquoise colors, and the main settlement is located on the top of a hill. That’s all I could see from the island before the ferry started its short journey to Schinoussa.

Every day in Schinoussa, I could enjoy a spectacular view of Iraklia from my veranda. It seemed that you could even swim to the island. And every morning after breakfast, I promised myself that I would visit Iraklia one of the following days for a daily excursion.

But there was a slight problem with my Iraklia plan: I can never wake up early enough.

You can go on a daily excursion to Iraklia only if you take the ferry at 9 am. Half of the days, there is a ferry back around 4 pm -otherwise, you should consider spending the night there. From what I saw online, there are several options for accommodation, and the island seems much cheaper than Schinoussa.

One day I tried to wake up around 8 am. I have set the alarm clock, and I thought I would make it. But then, I said to myself, “Okay, ten more minutes, and I’m off.” As you can imagine, I woke up at 10 am, and the chance was gone.

I heard locals are offering daily tours from Schinoussa to Iraklia.

The truth is, I was never really fond of this sort of excursion. Usually, the sailing boats leave shortly before noon in order to attract more people. They would offer a tour around the island of Iraklia, stop in a couple of bays for ten-twenty minutes so the people can jump in the water and shoot some selfies, and then continue their route around the island. This is definitely an option, but I was not really fond of it.

I ‘d instead go by ferry, explore the island on foot, talk with the locals, wander a bit around, and later in the afternoon take the boat back.

I’d rather go another time to Iraklia and spend a couple of days there.
