Travel & Street Photography Recap 11
I initially thought of not writing the Travel & Street photography recap 11. August is the sweetest month of the year, traditionally dictating a certain degree of laziness. It’s also the time that most people go on vacation, leaving the city behind, and enjoying the time off. But I didn’t go on holiday in August, because I wanted to work on the blog as well as some projects for the winter. Hence, during the last weekend of August, I decided to write the travel and street photography recap 11.
The truth is that it would have been a pity not to write this recap. All August long, I posted my writing from my long road trip to Alentejo. That beautiful region of Portugal kept me somehow occupied for the whole month. Going through the photos from Alentejo, editing the texts, bringing back the smell of the pine trees, all these things made me long for more summer. I would love to return to Alentejo soon, for me the road trip in the region marked somehow the beginning of the summer.
I still remember swimming in the freezing Atlantic Ocean, and I can still recall the taste of the delicious food. In Alentejo, I have also met some of the most polite people I’ve ever come across. Talking to them, listening to their stories, and seeing the environment that they live and work made me think of my life. I kept wondering during my stay in Alentejo what makes me happy, what gives me energy. Longing for the summer, swimming in the sea, and eating fish are definitely key factors for my mental stability. Oh Alentejo, I’m so not ready for the winter…
August’s posts
In August, I decided to upload fewer posts. It was not out of laziness; on the contrary, it was due to the fact that I’ve been working night and day.
First of all, I posted a very personal entry, called Street Photography: of light and shadow. I call this post personal because I tried to dig deep inside me and understand why am I attracted continuously by specific patterns in photography. I’ve been taking photos for a couple of years now, and despite trying to shoot different kinds of pictures, there is always a motif that I want to develop further. Taking photos of people appearing in the shadows has attracted me for many years. In the article I posted, I’m exploring the reasons behind that project.
On the other hand, as I already wrote, this month was all about Alentejo. My road trip to Alentejo resulted in a very long travelogue, counting more than 7,000 words. I decided to split it into three pieces. That way, it would be more comfortable for you to read it and I could also post more photos. The three sections of my Alentejo travelogue are:
- Alentejo Litoral. This is the first post about Alentejo, where I’m exploring the southernmost area of the region. My days in Zambujeira do Mar are definitely a highlight of my whole stay.
- Central Alentejo. Traveling through Central Alentejo is pure joy. It also means that you will come across the rural heart of Alentejo, an area with sweet and shy people. There are amazing places like Evora, Elvas, and Evoramonte, and the landscape is stunning.
- Back to the coast. In the final chapter of my Alentejo days, I return to the coast. But this time is the northern part of the coast, the one located close to Lisbon.
If you are interested in visiting the region, make sure to read the entries. You will find lots of information about where to stay and what to do in Alentejo. Plus, you will also read stories and descriptions about this beautiful region.
Update 2020: I also wrote a very long travel guide for your visit to Alentejo, including tips and a suggested itinerary. You can check it out here.
What else I did in August 2019 (*giveaway alert*)

As you probably remember from last month, my online store is up and running. So, apart from working on the blog, I have also finished another ebook that you can find in the store (see below) together with the Instagram ebook and the Ricoh GR ii Lightroom Presets.
Also one of the things that occupied me this month was planning a giveaway! The end of September 2019 marks the first anniversary of the Letters to Barbara. Although you will soon read about my experience after a full year of travel blogging, I also want to thank you for being part of this beautiful journey. Therefore, I’m currently organizing a big giveaway to celebrate with you this milestone. So make sure to check the blog around the 20th of September and find out what you can win.
Don’t forget to follow me on social media for updates!
An ebook about travel writing
In August, I have also concluded another ebook (the first one was Instagram Explained). It deals with travel writing and is an extended version of my free travel writing course. The title of the ebook is “12 Travel Writing Tips,” and it includes seven new entries. In this almost 7,000 words ebook, I’ve included the tips I use for over a decade now whenever I want to write a travelogue.
You can purchase it here. The ebook comes together with a free infographic that summarizes all the twelve steps.
And a Freebie
One of the most popular articles of my travel blog is the Greek islands on a budget guide. In this long post, I’m explaining how you can stay for three weeks in the Greek islands for less than 1,000 euros. People from all over the world visit and share this article continuously.
In August I have created a free pdf file with all the info from the article plus useful links. You can get it by completing the form below. After subscribing make sure to check your e-mail; you must first confirm your subscription (sorry for the extra step, but there are way too many bots out there) and then you will receive a link to download the infographic.
What’s on the travel & street photography recap 11
In the travel and street photography recap 11, you will see the photos from Alentejo that didn’t find a place in the blog posts. August is probably the heart of the summer, and by presenting Alentejo, I thought that somehow summer is still around the corner.
Of course, all the photos that you are going to see here are taken with my Ricoh GR ii camera.
