Travel & Street Photography Recap 14

Travel & Street Photography Recap 14

November was much busier than I initially thought. In the previous recap, I thought that I’d upload just three or four posts. Well, after going through the content in my “Drafts,” I decided to post a bit more. I actually posted six entries (you can find them in the next section); therefore, the Travel & Street Photography recap 14 has once again enough content for you to read.

My daily life in Berlin was equally busy. Apart from hosting friends on the second weekend of November 2019, I also decided to leave my flat in Berlin. No, I’m not leaving Berlin. On the contrary, I will keep spending most of the year here. But somehow, my flat in Berlin has been an unwanted weight for me for the last couple of months. You see, after I started traveling a lot, there was no reason paying rent for a flat that I didn’t see so often.

But moving out means that you have to deal with a variety of things: bills, informing the local authorities, visiting the bank to declare a change of address, selling furniture, packing your belongings. Relocating is, of course, a long and time-consuming process. So in November, I started with the initial steps of moving out: I dealt with some bureaucracy, I sold a few things. I plan to speed up in December and be ready to move out shortly before Christmas.

Even if my Berlin life occupied a good part of the month, I managed to travel a bit too. At the beginning of November, I visited some friends in Frankfurt. After returning from Glasgow, I got sick for two days, and the day I recovered, the Catalina update of my MacBook brought some unwanted stress: the laptop got into a boot loop. This caused me two full days of anxiety, but it was finally solved without more problems thanks to Time Machine. Therefore, visiting Frankfurt after a hell of a week felt really like the best vacation. I didn’t plan to write about Frankfurt because I wanted to relax, but I shot several photos, and I decided to present to you a photo-report from Frankfurt within the next couple of weeks.

I also traveled to Kyiv (or Kiev) in November 2019. Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has been for a long time in my bucket list. I wrote extensively about the city, and you will soon see some of my posts. The city feels bigger than it really is, and I have spent a fantastic week there. As I often say (and write), I find Ukraine to be one of the most original countries in Europe, and I’m actually thinking of presenting some photo-reports from Odessa and Lviv, two cities that I visited before starting the Letters to Barbara.

I posted a variety of things in November. The first post of the month was actually an article that I wrote back in spring. Writing a long literary tribute to Franz Kafka was actually the main reason for visiting Prague. The article Following Franz Kafka in Prague is probably the most comprehensive guide you’ll find online about the whereabouts of the famous writer in the city. I tried to include all the places that he lived, worked, and frequented in Prague. Check it out and make sure to save the article as a reference if you ever visit Prague. Also, a few days later, I posted the Things to do in Prague, a guide with tips for budgeting, accommodation, and sightseeing in this beautiful European city.

About a week later, I posted my first entry from Glasgow. I found Glasgow to be fascinating, and after spending a few days there, I thought of creating a photo-report. The Glaswegians is a street photography post, with images from local faces and their interaction with Glasgow’s architecture. In December, you will also read my travelogue from Glasgow, but so far, I only uploaded a review about the airline I traveled with to Glasgow. I flew Business Class with Lufthansa from Berlin to Glasgow, and I wrote a very long report about the experience. The Lufthansa Business Class review has several photos and an honest review of the airline’s services.

By the end of November, I uploaded two more posts. The first one made me whisper a couple of times, “Ah, Anafi,” but that’s not the title, of course. It’s actually my travelogue from this year’s vacation in Anafi. A letter to Anafi is a post full of affection for one of my favorite places on earth. I’ve written several posts about the island (check the “Anafi” category here), but this year, I thought of changing my approach: you will discover that I didn’t write for Anafi and that I wrote to Anafi.

Last but not least, I also uploaded a review about the Polaroid OneStep+. I’ve been using the camera since late August 2019, and I have composed a 4,500-words review. You can read everything about the camera, and I also included several tips on how to shoot better polaroids. It’s my honest opinion about Polaroid Originals’ latest model, and it also serves as a guide to polaroid photography.

What’s on the travel & street photography recap 14

My Ricoh GR ii was extremely busy in Glasgow, and I have several photos from that journey. Therefore, in the Travel & Street Photography recap 14, you will see some images from Glasgow. The rest you will see them soon in the posts from the city. I decided to present to you some that didn’t actually find a place in the other articles.

Apart from that, I’m also posting here one photo from Berlin. I’ll explain below why I’m posting this specific photo.

A Photo from Berlin

On the 9th of November 2019, Germany celebrated the 30 years from the Fall of the Berlin Wall. For a week, the city hosted lots of festivities in seven different areas, and there were loads of events. Although I initially thought of covering the celebrations in a photo-report, the truth is that I found the celebrations not so easy to photograph. I shot a couple of photos here and there, but I didn’t feel that there was a good photo-report on my camera. Since I always want to present to you the best content I have, I skipped the idea. There was, however, a photo from the so-called 30 Jahre Mauerfall celebrations that felt special to me.

The photo received lots of attention from local media, and it was featured both on Instagram and Twitter. What you see in the background is the main installation for the 30 Years from the Fall of the Berlin Wall celebrations. These are actually 30,000 messages with wishes from people and organizations about the festivities. They were part of an installation fluttering in the wind in front of the legendary Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate). It was impressive to see and offered a colorful tone in an otherwise gloomy November.

Photos from Glasgow

And here are my photos from Glasgow. Although the Travel & Street Photography recap 14 is not full of Glasgow in terms of writing, I thought of adding them here, as a prelude for December’s posts.

The first photo was a rather odd moment for me. I never saw outdoor washing machines before, let alone the fact they belonged to a gas station.

Sometimes, Glasgow feels like a tribute to Rennie Mackintosh, the prolific Glaswegian architect. So, here is the spiral staircase of the Lighthouse.

I found the dark lanes of Glasgow fascinating. Some of the locals recommended not to walk there after dusk, but I couldn’t resist temptation.

This is probably the last photo I shot in Glasgow. It’s from the lobby of the hotel I stayed in. Fun fact: when I booked it, its name was Best Western Hotel Glasgow; however, when I checked out, it was renamed to Safestay Glasgow. No matter what, I had a fantastic stay, and I can only recommend it. You can book your stay at Safestay Glasgow here.

Glasgow is an industrial city, and the motifs are countless. This is not a superb example of street photography (actually it’s not at all), but I thought of presenting this facade photo in order to give you an impression of Glasgow’s buildings.
