Well, the travel summary 2018 is definitely a pleasant article to write. Why?
Because creating from scratch the Letters To Barbara travel blog was definitely one of the best things that ever happened to me.
This was not an easy decision: it took a lot of work, preparation and reading. I had to learn SEO, I had to put my thoughts in order and then I had to deal with the budget. In the end, everything went smoothly and the hard work starts to pay off. I know, I know: a travel summary can be boring and uninteresting. But please, stay with me and I promise to provide you with some useful info. How am I gonna do that? Well, instead of writing tons of words I will provide you a couple of inspiring links; if you find one of them interesting too, then click on it and you will be redirected to the article.
Travel summary 2018
Greece (+the start)
I think that one has to understand what the Letters to Barbara is all about. Therefore, my Travel Summary 2018 article should start from that: follow this link and find out how everything started.
I have also written a complete guide on how to start a travel blog, therefore if you feel inspired check it out.
After designing and setting up this website during July and August 2018, I started traveling. It’s not a big surprise that my first journeys were in Greece. I have visited the following islands: Aegina, Schinoussa, Sikinos and of course Anafi. Oh, and I should mention that I failed to visit Iraklia. And, of course, I’ve written a complete guide on how to travel around the Greek islands on a budget.
Belarus
In October 2018 I traveled to Belarus. This is a country that I always wanted to visit and I’m very glad I did. I felt like a rocket man in Minsk, I admired the Heroes of Brest. And, of course, I was finally able to track down the whereabouts of Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin of JFK.
Georgia

Later on, I visited Georgia. This small country has a big heart and it was on my bucket list for many many years. It was refreshing to visit Georgia and discover that stream of hope in Tbilisi. But traveling to Georgia is not only about the capital: I traveled around this beautiful country until I ended up in Chiatura, a modern dystopia. I, unfortunately, couldn’t meet with Maxime but I could admire the home he lives for the past 25 years.
Armenia
An early morning flight took me to Yerevan. It was late October and this was the first time this autumn that I had to cope with freezing temperatures. But Yerevan is such a warm city! The people are welcoming and extremely friendly and the city itself a pearl. I wrote extensively about Yerevan, but I was eager to see more. Hence, in the following days, I traveled around this majestic country. Last, but of course, not least, I fulfilled an oracle in Armenia: I could meet with the bizarre widow that I promised back in Anafi.
Munich & Salzburg
In November it was all about the Alps. The landscape is fantastic and I’m glad I visited Munich, although it was not on my list. But this is a wonderful city and I had the chance to watch some football there, too. Salzburg, on the other hand, is a beautiful city where literally everything is about Mozart. I only wish there was some snow…
Estonia
After a short stay at my home in Berlin, I hit the road again. This time I flew towards Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. My feelings were mixed though: a beautiful city but slightly sleepy for my taste. The locals were polite but distant at the same time.
Switzerland
The last stop of the year and the one that concludes the travel summary 2018 was Switzerland. This is a country of extremes: it is extremely beautiful and extremely expensive. I still can’t believe how I spent almost 80 euros for spaghetti and wine! Apart from that fact, the country has some breathtaking spots. I fell in love with Lucerne, I remained ecstatic in front of the buildings of Zurich, I visited Winterthur and Sankt Gallen and I stopped at Bregenz to see the art museum. Well, you are right: Bregenz is in Austria. But this was part of my Swiss journey, therefore I thought of adding it here. You will read about Switzerland in January 2019 🙂
Travel & Street Photography Recaps
Photography spices things up. I’m very glad that I received so much positive feedback on my Instagram account about my photos, therefore I thought of making an extra section on this blog dedicated to photography. Most of the photos that appear here are not to be seen elsewhere (not even on Instagram) therefore make sure to check out my recaps. The first three ones are here: Number 1, Number 2, and Number 3.
I’m now in Berlin
After a long period of traveling, I’m now in Berlin. I’m enjoying Christmas and I’m making plans for 2019. Meanwhile, I thought of writing a guide to the best Christmas Markets in Berlin.
Wishes and promises
Now that the Travel Summary 2018 is over, I would like to wish each one of you a Happy 2019! I hope that you will make all your dreams come true! Last year, I was sure that I would never make this blog; but this happened. All I want to say here is: if they tell you that something is impossible, simply go for it. Make 2019 the best year of your life.
From my side, I promise that I will keep this travel blog interesting and full of journeys. Meanwhile, I plan to offer advice and tutorials that will help you to travel better or to improve your travel writing and photography. For example, there is already up and running a FREE Travel Writing Course. And of course, if you want to receive a roundup of my journeys as well as original content that won’t appear elsewhere, subscribe to my newsletter.
So, that’s all for now! Have an awesome 2019 everyone!
Love,
George
